Veterinary practices across the South East are delivering health plans for livestock farms, boosting farm profitability through improved animal health.
Farm health planning is one of the most cost-effective ways of managing the risk of animal disease in a herd or flock and once health plans are in place, significant economic benefits accrue over time.
This Livestock Health South East project, covering the South East and London, has helped more than 60 vets to take up a free, one-day accreditation course that equips them to deliver farm health plans. The NFU is a partner in this project which is funded by the South East England Development Agency, SEEDA, through the Rural Development Programme for England.
The project has already funded more than 200 farm health plans, with the target being to deliver 500 plans by 2012. The project funds 80% of the costs involved, and a farmer can therefore receive £750 worth of veterinary health planning for £150 – the project funds the £600 differential.
In addition, the project provides 100% funding for any sampling and testing that the vet may recommend, up to £200. To take part, farmers will need to be resident in the South East region, and are required to contact vets who are on the register to deliver health plans as part of the project.
